“Dynamic Nuclear Polarization, a field of study in its own right, is a tool for building polarized targets... It is also a tool for another field of nuclear magnetism...”
A. Abragam*, M. Goldman. Nuclear Magnetism: Order and Disorder (1982)
In the twenty-five years since the writing of these lines, many other fields of nuclear magnetism have begun to incorporate some form of DNP: solid state CP-MAS, liquid state MRI, biochemical NMR, metabolic MRS...
The necessary hardware is rather different for the "dissolution-DNP" method, used for MRI/MRS, and the "gyrotron-DNP" method, used in CP-MAS solid-state NMR.
A couple of specific molecules have been used to perform DNP via "photo-excited triplet states". The hardware required for such experiment includes a quite powerful light source but it is in principle not necessary to work at very low temperature.
